So you want to capture the entire family..
An extended family session is perfect!
I absolutely love getting to capture the enduring love and warmth when several generations get together for a session. There is something so special about getting to see how one love story multiplies in to several generations. I know it may seem like a strenuous task organizing everyone, but keep reading to find how we can capture these memories stress free!
1.Appoint a main point of contact
The first tip is appointing a family member that can be the main source of contact for the entire group. This person is ideally organized, and can help relay information from the photographer to your entire family. It may be helpful to have a specific group chat dedicated to your session where you can coordinate wardrobe and any must-have shots for everyone!
2.Pick a color palette for wardrobe
This next part I can absolutely assist with! I can send some example color palettes of colors that work well to creating a balanced image. My number one tip is NO family matching. When everyone matches we start to blend together, and we want all of you to shine beautifully! It is also important to consider the location we will be shooting at, so we have colors that play well off of that. Another thing to note, is that it is best to not mix up too many patterns, as this can look very busy.
3.Have a shot list in mind
Think about those most have shots you have for this session, and communicate those with me! For extended family sessions, I will typically take images of the entire group and then break up in to smaller groups. This could include parents with children, grandparents with grandkids, and each individual family. Each session is unique, so make sure if there is a specific shot you would like you let that be known so we can be sure to capture it on the day of your session.
And lastly..have fun!
Any excuse to get everyone together is a good one, so make sure we're having fun during our session! We will play games with the kids, and enjoy our time together. I am so honored when families choose me to capture them as they are right in this moment in time, and sometimes that includes just letting the kids be kids! Don't fret if they aren't perfectly smiling in every single image..many times that magic comes from those in between moments when they are laughing so hard from a fart joke from Uncle Sal, or picking their nose (because that's just what toddlers DO!).
